Kids of Light Ministry
The School
In 2019 husband-and-wife team Charles and Harriet Obote felt the pull of God's calling to address the needs of those in the Alebtong District in Uganda. Those living in the Alebtong District are some of the country's most impoverished and uneducated. In an effort to alleviate the suffering, they decided to start a school to help individuals, families, and true orphans.
The main goal of the school is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ to vulnerable children and their families and show them the love of Christ by meeting their most fundamental needs. Supported and accredited by the local government, the school provides quality education in a safe environment, including food and long-term shelter as needed.
From 7 to 275 Students
What began in 2019 with 7 children has grown to 175 students in 2022, with 275 registered for the 2023 school year. Presently, there are 25 qualified teachers and support staff, while 50 boys and 27 girls live at the school year-round.
In an effort to become self-sufficient, the school currently has three large gardening and farming plots. Despite the farming and the support from the local church and many local families, the majority of students rely on at least a partial scholarship provided by Ukids.
Ukids Support
In addition to providing scholarships for students attending Kids of Light, Ukids has partnered with KOL with its facility development. In 2020 Ukids helped to build a 16-room school. In 2021 funds were raised to convert two classrooms into boys' and girls' dormitories, and to drill a deep bore hole on the property to provide ready and clean water access for the school.
In 2022 Ukids helped add a kitchen and a separate lavatory to the campus. Currently, Ukids hope to fund the expansion of the dormitories, and the addition of a solar electrical system as resources become available.
